Impressive: government achieves its Syrian refugee goal

Last fall, the new Canadian government announced a goal to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada before the end of 2015. As the magnitude of the undertaking became evident, the target date was put back by a few weeks, but the goal has now essentially been met.

Official data posted on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website as of 10 February 2016 shows the following:

Refugees landed in Canada since 4 November: 19,432

Applications finalized but refugees have not yet travelled to Canada: 5,270

Applications in progress: 12,746

Immigration Canada data reports that government-assisted refugees totalled 11,247 and privately sponsored refugees totalled 6,578, with a further 1,607 categorized as blended visa-office referred refugees. The single largest number of applications have been from Lebanon, followed by Jordan and Turkey.  The government organized 73 flights to bring Syrian refugees to Canada with some 218 communities preparing to welcome them.

It’s an impressive performance by any standard, certainly compared to that of the United States, Britain and Australia.
